Final Practicum Instructions
Please read all instructions carefully and complete the tasks as specified in the time allotted. As we have thoroughly covered and repeatedly practiced all of the competencies required for this practicum, the professor will not help you with your practicum. Do not expect assistance unless it is required due to a malfunctioning station. Remember to turn on all required devices. Note: Save often or risk loosing your session data and starting over.
Final Practicum
á Create a Pro Tools session using the following settings (10 points):
o Audio file type: .WAV
o Sample rate: 48 kHz
o Bit depth: 24-bit
o I/O settings: Last used
á Call it LastName_2600_final and save the session to the Firewire drive. If your stationÕs Firewire drive is not available or functioning save the session to your desktop (10 points).

From the Event
menu, choose Tempo, Constant and set the tempo to quarter note equals 114.00 bpm
for bars ranging from 1|1|000 to 80|1|000 (10 points).

Create one stereo Master Fader track (5 points).
á
Create and name the following auxiliary input tracks
(15 points):

Trpts verb (stereo)
o
Saxes verb (stereo)
o
Click aux (mono)

Create and name the following audio tracks (15 points):
o
Trpt stem (stereo)
o
Sax stem (stereo)

Click (mono)

Zero the output level of each the Trpts verb, Saxes verb, and Click auxiliary
tracks (10 points).

Select the name of the Click audio track so that it is highlighted in order to
place the following tracks below or to the right of the existing tracks on your
session (5 points).

Import the audio files located in the MUM2600 Practicum
Audio files folder located on your desktop
(15 points).

Insert a mono instrument called click in the Click
aux track (5 points).

Assign the Output

and set the volume to -1.0 dB (6 points).

Pan the Tenor Sax 2 track approximately left <100
and set the volume to -5.8 dB (6 points).

Assign the Output
of the Tenor Sax 1 track to Bus 4

Insert a Compressor
and choose the Stereo Program Comp 1
preset on each the Trpt stem and Sax
stem audio tracks. (10 points).

Assign the first available Send of the Trpt stem track to Bus 5-6 (5 points).
á
Assign the first available Send of the Sax stem track to Bus 7-8 (5 points).
á
From the Options
menu, make sure QuickPunch is
checked (5 points).
á
Arm the Click, Trpt
stem and Sax stem audio tracks. Record the Click, Trpt stem and Sax stem tracks (30
points). Note: If you donÕt hear the trumpets and saxophones depress Option-K
to select Auto Input Monitoring.
á
Insert a compressor on the Bass track, choose the Basic Bass preset, and adjust the Gain to +4.0 dB (5 points).
á
Insert a 1-band EQ on the Bass track and adjust the Gain to +4.0 dB at 90 Hz with a Q of 1.30 (5 points).
á
Insert a compressor on the Stylus RMX track, choose Stereo Drum Comp from the presets menu, and adjust the Gain to +6.0 dB (5 points).
á
Mute the Strike_03
audio track (5 points).
á
Set the volume
of the Vibes track to -2.5 dB (5
points).
á
In the edit window, click on the Stylus RMX track.
Using the transport section at the top of the edit window, set the start point
to 72|1|240 and the end point to 80|1|000. Hold down the Shift key click on the
Strike audio track so that both the
Stylus RMX and Strike track areas ranging from 72|1|240 to 80|1|000 are
selected. Press ÒApple-EÓ to create a new segment and then ÒApple-MÓ to mute
the segment (20 points).

From the transport area of the edit window set the
start point to 4|4|480 and the end point to 72|4|000 (5 points).
á
Make sure the Click
and Strike audio tracks are muted
(5 points)
á
Bounce the session to disk using parameters, AIFF,
Stereo Interleaved, 44.1 kHz, 16 bit. Name the bounced track,
LastName_WMM_bounce, and save it to the top layer of your session folder (20
points).
á
Save your Pro Tools session and close Pro Tools.
á
Open iTunes. From the iTunes File
menu choose Import to library and
find your newly bounced file (5 points).
á
Highlight the AIFF file inside iTunes. Choose Convert
to MP3 from the iTunes Advanced menu (5 points).
If you do not finish the test
today, you will have an opportunity to finish this practicum during the next
regular class meeting. Note that the projects may be erased by lab assistants
or disturbed by other students using the lab. In any case, the project is your
responsibility as it would be in a professional studio.
Please have your final recording
projects ready for the final meeting. Please do not submit your final the
projects if the contain inappropriate language or in any way violate the rules
set forth in the final project handout. Students who turn in such work will
receive grades as specified in the final project handout.
I will pass out grade reports next
class meeting and will give everyone their final grade upon reviewing their
final projects and recording notes. Those who have repeatedly skipped class or
wandered in late will be credited for their efforts.
